What is Light Therapy?

What is Light Therapy?

The current trend is the no-makeup, makeup look with a barely there stance. Looking “natural” has been in the keyword in makeup for a while now – gone are the days where we cake thick layers of makeup on our skin. Less has become more and makeup looks and products have become more sheer and luminous to bring out a barely there effect.

This means that a good skin as base has become increasingly important. Instead of using concealers to cover up imperfections, the focus should be to treat them and rid of them completely.

Light therapy is one popular at-home treatment for many and you might have seen many different products coming in different colours.

So, what is light therapy (also chromatherapy) and what exactly do the different colours of light do?

We have summarised down below on different lights and their functions:

  1. Blue Light
  2. Red Light
  3. Green Light

    Blue Light

Blue light treatments are used to kill bacteria, especially those that cause acne. The blue wavelengths of light penetrate into the pores and eliminate the inflammation-causing bacteria in them. Does it really work? A study showed 33 people, aged between 25 to 45 years old, using a blue light device together with skincare products twice daily over the course of eight weeks. At the end of the eight week, more than 90 percent of those who completed the study showed improvements in their skin’s overall appearance, clarity, radiance, tone, texture and smoothness.

    Red Light

Red light is also a common at-home chromatherapy treatment for acne. Instead of killing the bacteria like blue light, red wavelengths “strengthens” cells by allowing them to create more energy. With more energy, cells can more efficiently repair and rejuvenate themselves. It also “activates” the lymphatic system which removes the lymphatic toxins in the body.

    Green Light

Green light therapy is used for treating dark eye bags and pigmentation. Green light rays is absorbed by the cells producing melanin, a dark biological pigment. When these cells absorb the light, it reduces the melanocytes (pigment cells) production. This way, areas of the skin with hyperpigmentation such as freckles and age spots will be lightened.
